In this session, we will explore some of the strategies to successfully implement change within projects without sacrificing morale, major losses in productivity and performance. We will explore the tools project managers need to optimize communication efforts, guide project stakeholders through the emotional reactions to change, and deal effectively with high levels of uncertainty.

Learning Outcomes:

Explore the fundamentals of organization and project change.

Outline common pitfalls to changes within projects and effective communication strategies.

Describe how project managers can interpret stakeholder's reactions to change and how to take control, communicate, and manage the transition.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Tom Cooper is a Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration, Memorial University as well as being an advisor to the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors. His research, advisory, and teaching interests include risk management and strategic planning. He is an active facilitator at the Gardiner Centre for Memorial University and is the Academic Director for the Mastering Business Essentials program at the Centre. Tom is also involved in engaging local communities and not-for-profit organizations in strategic planning and innovation as well as acting as an industry advisor. He is a Certified Management Consultant having worked extensively as an advisor with the private, public, and not-for-profit sector organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador, Atlantic Canada as well as the Caribbean over the last eighteen months. Most of this advisory work has been focused on strategic planning and risk management in the context of innovation.

Prior to taking his position at Memorial, Tom was a Senior Manager in PwC’s Consulting practice in London, United Kingdom for seven years. He holds a Ph.D. in Business from the Warwick Business School, University of Warwick, United Kingdom and undergraduate degrees in commerce and philosophy from Memorial University.
